What is DNA Testing?

Genetic testing is one of the most important tools available for understanding individual risks for cancer and other diseases.

Identifying DNA changes within specific genes gives patients and their doctors power to make proactive decisions to prevent and manage their health.

BRCA1 & BRCA2 genes encode essential molecules that help damaged DNA.

These genes, if mutated, are major risk factors for the onset of Breast & Ovarian cancer.

Through the genetic test, physicians and patients can begin early preventative care and observations prior to development of cancer. The test is non-invasive and requires just a cheek swab.

The decreasing cost of genetic testing can allow laboratories to provide more affordable options for everyone...

But the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted patents on over 20% of human genes, and these unconstitutional gene patents will prevent this freedom, making it difficult or impossible for many to know their risks.

The Story...

On May 12, 2009, the ACLU and the Public Patent Foundation filed a lawsuit against Myriad Genetics. The lawsuit disputed the specific patents on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

June 13, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court made a decision that many of Myriad Genetics' patent claims were invalid.

Quickly after Gene by Gene launched their more affordable BRCA1/2 test, Myriad Genetics filed a lawsuit, against Gene by Gene & other companies, based on auxiliary patents regarding the BRCA patents that the Supreme Court did not specifically rule on.

in response, rejected the patent infringement claims by Myriad. Thus, FreeMyGenes.org was founded to fight for allowing other companies to offer affordable BRCA testing & to make Data Sharing available to greater benefit the research of BRCA1/2 genes.
